Unsung Playmaker: Mater Academy Charter 17' DB Devonta Lopez (5-11, 185)
Mater Academy Charter (Hialeah, FL) -- The Lions' team captain and defensive stand out, continues to be overlooked for his accomplishments both on-and-off the field.
At this point -- what more can you ask for from the young man. Lopez, has done everything needed from on the field to inside of the classroom, I'll explain. The class of 2017 defensive back has division one size -- standing at 5-foot-11, 185-pounds and can sprint 40-yards within the 4.5 neighborhood along with a 36 inch vertical jump and 4.18 shuttle.
The past three years on varsity -- Lopez has answered all possible questions concerning his recruitment. Lopez has lined-up at cornerback, nickel, strong safety, free safety and gunner and has displayed both man-to-man and zone coverage.
Lopez turned-in an outstanding junior season by finishing Top 10 in South Florida in interceptions, tackles, fumble recoveries and blocked kicks.
Junior Stats:
4 - Interceptions 1
14 - Tackles
6 - Pass deflections
4 - Fumble recoveries
2 - Forced fumbles
2 - Blocked kicks
Inside of the classroom. Lopez is already a college qualifier. He sports a 2.7 weighted GPA and scored a 1220 on his SAT (3-Parts). The young man is his team captain and the true definition of a blue collar worker. Lopez receives no recognition, but he continues to work hard and motivate his teammates to get better every single day.
Lopez has started varsity 7on7 football for the GVP All-Stars, since his freshman year of high school. The same team who was responsible for defeating nationally known 7on7 football powers: South Florida Express and Fire South. Speaking of 7on7 football -- Lopez has quietly recorded 15 - Interceptions this past spring.
Here's a young man from a great household. Parents are married. He's handling business both on-and-off the field (college qualifier) and he's going to give you his all with no back talk. Miguel Lopez is one of the best defensive unsung athletes for the class of 2017 that's already squared away inside of the classroom. He's just patiently waiting on his first college football offer.
Lopez recorded over 100-tackles and 4 -Interceptions the past year and he's a college qualifier. I'm sure someone is going to pull the trigger very soon.
