As the local sportswriter of South Florida -- covering both the youth and high school levels. I haven't seen a better cover corner for the class of 2019 than the Spartans' very own future phenom Chris McDonald Jr.
The 5-foot-10, 165-pounder, has attended notable events such as Florida Fire Open Run, Florida Fire Tryouts and several 7on7 Tournaments and was awarded the best cornerback for his class every single time. He can play press, off and zone coverage.
Speaking of 7on7 football. Chris McDonald earned a starting job for nationally known Florida Fire. Which speaks volumes considering it's a Division One loaded -- top to bottom team.
Pictured above is Chris McDonald Jr. & Coral Gables 18' DB Gilbert Frierson -- on this particular day, Frierson was extended a verbal offer by Alabama -- and earned multiple offers with 48-hours standing out at Florida Fire Tryouts.
What didn't go viral was Chris McDonald Jr. performance. He was the out right top freshman cornerback at the tournament and was the Top 5 overall cornerback out of over 400 student-athletes.
Chris was named to the prestigious Rising Stars All-South Florida Freshman Team and didn't allow a single touchdown on junior varsity nor varsity this past fall. How can you not extend an early offer on this kid. Chris has proven early on -- he can play with the best despite still having three years of eligibility in high school.
How about these accomplishments as a freshman this past season. He helped his junior varsity team go undefeated by leading his team in interceptions. He quickly moved up to varsity and didn't allow a single touchdown while earning quality playing time with five defensive backs ahead of him with D1-FBS offers: Shawn Davis, Coemba Jones, Billy Gibson Jr., Natron Grayson and Dicaprio Bottle.
Moreover, he earned a starting job for Florida Fire which is considered a nationally recognized 7on7 powerhouse football team. He has be named the best at his position and class at every notable off-season event. Last but not least, he's only going to continue to get better with teammates, who are committed to in-state powers: University of Florida and University of Miami at wide receiver and not to mention, his graduating class teammate Mark Pope is a future All-American.
Chris McDonald is the next highly sought after recruit in South Florida all said and done. His older cousin is a recent graduate of Louisville -- who started several seasons at cornerback named Andrew Johnson. He also graduated from Miami Southridge.
The soon-to-be sophomore can bench press 215, squat 255, dead lift 320 and has been hand-timed in the 4.5 neighborhood. His work ethnic and character stands out and he's a better person than football player. He currently sports a 3.0 weighted GPA.
