Rising Star: Everglades Preparatory (FL) 19' ATH Kavon Holmes (5-7, 160)
HOMESTEAD, FL -- There's so much football talent scattered across South Florida, even when you think you spotlighted each recruiting class stud, there's always another hidden gem that seems to just emerge out of nowhere. Well, speaking of emerging and hidden gems. Everglades Preparatory Academy (Homestead, FL) football program is entering its 2nd season this upcoming fall and has a small stature playmaker named Kavon Holmes who put up big statistics despite having an undersized offensive line that averaged 170-pounds.
As stated, Holmes doesn't pass the eyeball-test, standing 5-foot-6, 150-pounds but statistically speaking, the little-known prospect finished Top 10 statically in Miami-Dade County 5A-Ind classification in three categories: Rushing (658), Receiving (367) and Scoring (78) vs. upper tier programs such as Goleman, Chaminade-Madonna, Westminister Christian, Admiral Farragut and Keys Gate Charter helping the Panthers to .500 record (5-5) in their first inaugural season. Holmes accumulated 1,642 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns. On defense, playing primarily free safety, Holmes finished #2 in South Florida in interceptions with seven and his efforts didn't go unnoticed. The rising sophomore was last selected 3rd team All-Dade County last fall and was named to South Florida - Rising Stars All-South Florida Freshman Team.
Holmes lined up at wide receiver, running back and returner and engineered the Panthers to notable victories versus defending FIFC Champions Palmer Trinity and captured the Academy Cup (district play) vs. Somerset Academy Silver Palms. Last fall, Holmes was one of six freshman to make the All-Dade County Team. After observing his spring performance, it's safe to say his football resume will continue to expand after his spring game stellar performance.
Holmes touched the ball seven times for 195 all-purpose yards (76 - receiving & 118 - rushing) and scored two touchdowns. Everglades Preparatory also has several prospects worthy of recognition and next level athleticism: 17' CB/WR Tevin Charles, 18' QB Demetrius Burns & 21' RB/DB Sirr Daye.
