Miami Southridge's Dynamic Duo DEs James Head Jr. & Randy Charlton
Legendary Head Coach Bear Bryant is credited with the quote: “Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships.”
The last state ticket for the school, dates back to 1999 vs. Tallahassee Lincoln Trojans, where Southridge's current offensive coordinator David Cooney, scored the spartans first touchdown of the game at tight end. Miami Southridge defense has state bound written all over it, responsible for eight shutouts this season and could go down as one of the best of all-time led by "unsung" edge-rush specialist James Head Jr. (6-5, 210) and Randy Charlton (6-4, 220).
The dynamic duo edge-rush specialist performances throughout the season hasn't consisted of lower level competition nor cupcake-heavy scheduling. Over 25 sacks, 40 tackles for loss and not allowing a single running back to reach a hundred yards rushing is the type of impact, both are responsible for this fall.
Including the help from interior defensive lineman DeAndre Johnson (Mississippi State commit) and unheralded seniors Dimitry Prophete (6-0, 210) a full qualifier, who's the strongest on the team with 14 sacks and Travis Murray (6-1, 235) who contributes across the line of scrimmage.
James, a 3-Star recruit and the No. 17 ranked strong side defensive end in the country according to 247sports, is making a name for himself, after following in his father footsteps, a former spartan who earned Player of the Year in 2001 as multi-sport athlete.
Statistically speaking, James Head Jr. ranks No. 1 in South Florida (highest classification) in sacks with 15 and inside of the classroom he's an Advanced Placement (AP) student. Big time players, make big-time plays and let's just say, he's quietly dominating and is pushing for an additional star this off-season, and enter his senior year as 4-star recruit.
Teammate, Randy Charlton who's also a 3-Star recruit and the No. 23 ranked strong side defensive end in the country -- informed me college football coaches gave him and James Head Jr., the nickname "Twin Towers".
Randy, a 2.875 weighted grade-point-average student, sports offers from the likes of Nebraska, Mississippi State, Temple, Iowa State and Bowling Green.
Randy, has roughly 25 tackles for loss this season and registered three sacks in a single game. He admits, it's a challenge to just touch the quarterback or ball carrier first, when nearly every starter including three backups, hold division one offers. Randy and James, for the second consecutive season -- has reached the double digit sack mark and has the town of South Miami Heights -- excited for a run at the 8A finals.
