Class of 2020: Setting the standards high

The class-of-2020 is scary good. Lets just say, these young men will not miss a beat, as far as continuing the long-and-rich tradition in South Florida, when it comes to high school football.

Here's three underclassmen topping the charts for their team's and the Miami Metropolitan Area. Belen Jesuit RB Don Chaney, Jr., South Miami HS WR Gerand Turner, and University School of Nova DL Jalen Reeves all share something in common, which is the sophomores are leading South Florida in rushing, receiving, and sacks.

Don Chaney, Jr. of Belen Jesuit Prep, continues to prove he's everything as advertised. After earning both first team Maxpreps All-American and All-county, he's on his way for the same accolades with the addition of first team All-State. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound, Athlete who over five D1 FBs verbal offers. He's an All-American in waiting.

South Miami High School WR Gerand Turner, the nephew of Uni. of Miami safety Robert Knowles, earned Rising Stars first team All-South Florida and he's on track to be named first team all-county. He's 6-foot-1, 180-pounds that holds an early offer by Florida Atlantic University. The Cobras' unsung sophomore leads South Florida in receiving yards. He will be a (20) plus offer kid all said and done. You can't coach size and clutch performances. University School of Nova is a perfect name for what head coach Daniel Luque and staff is doing in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The Sharks' underclassmen roster is set for higher learning with a bundle of verbal scholarships.

The Sharks' defensive lineman Jalen Reeves, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound, reminds me of Virginia Teach's sack master Corey Moore. Reeves recorded (8) sacks just in three games. The 3rd team all-county selection as a freshman, has opponents doubled and triple block him now. Now, that's respect. He currently holds an early offer by Bowling Green

Monarch HS has arguably the most talented, but little-known prospect in the state of Florida named Xaiver Restrepo, who stands 5-foot-10, 175-pounds. The Knights' jack-of-all-trades athlete, has dominated in all three phases of the game. Throughout five games, he's responsible for 31 total tackles (4TFL), 1 sack, 2 Ints, 3 PDFs, 1 FF, 5 FG Blocks. On offense, he has amassed 526 total yards (2-4 passing 65 yards 2 TD's, 24 carries 286 yards 4 TD's, 9 rec 117 1 TD). Restrepo earned the Florida Fire Tryouts and Showcase (15U) 7-on-7 football overall MVP per Rising Stars. The rising sophomore also earned Rising Stars All-South Florida Freshmen Team. College football programs need to make a visit to Coconut Creek, Fla., and verbally offer this young man.

Miami Booker T. Washington continues to plug and play, with a wealth of underclassmen talent. The Tornadoes' sophomore speedy slot receiver, Jovan Ferguson, Jr. (5-10,160), has found the end zone an astounding four times this season versus top-notch competition, consisting of American Heritage Plantation and Miami Northwestern. The rising sophomore has top-end speed that should see his stock increase as the Tornadoes, make another run a 4A state title. The scary part about Ferguson, Jr. is he's a converted quarterback, still transitioning to the position with a track and field background.

Champagnat Catholic RB Calvin Montgomery, has trimmed off the baby fat, and appears a lot more smooth and quicker this fall. The bruiser helps keep the pressure off his quarterback, using his 5-foot-10, 200-pound frame. Montgomery ranks No. 6 in Miami-Dade County in rushing yards and No. 1 in independent to 4A classification. Bowling Green has verbally offered the north-south runner and expect more offers down the line. He reminds me of a Big Ten Conference running back.
