Pioneers' McCray named Freshman of the Week
By Jerry Williamson
As the high school football season nears the playoffs, the cream will rise to the top, as each game becomes more challenging for these young men, removed approximately, two months from middle school. The defensive Player of the Week, goes to North Miami HS freshman linebacker Amahri McCray. The 5-foot-11, 190 pound rising star, accumulated 14 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery vs. Miami Palmetto (with Hudl film).
Did you know? McCray (#52) was selected to play in the Miami Dolphins' Youth All-Star Game as an eighth grader. The future looks bright for this young man. He doesn't back down from competition and both of his forced fumbles caused were from seniors. The offensive Player of the Week, was none other than the undefeated 8A classification (highest classification) South Dade Bucs' QB/ATH Torey "Scooter" Morrison.
Scooter (#13) posted 233 yards for three touchdowns in South Dade's 47-7 victory over Miami Killian. The freshman, who holds an early offer by Florida Atlantic University, currently ranks Top 5 in Miami-Dade County in passing touchdowns with 10. Miami Booker T. Washington's freshman WR Jacorey Brooks, reached the mile stone mark at receiving against the Class 3A state runner up Chaminda-Mondonna. Brooks who possesses eye-catching size standing 6-foot-2, 175 pounds hauled in seven passes for 115 receiving yards.
Brooks (#7) already holds five Div. 1 power five conference verbal offers. The sky is the limit. I can't imagine his game three years from now. If you didn't review the roster, you would've thought he was a senior.
Another freshman who's quietly grinding statically, is North Miami HS running back Kelly Loiseau. The Pioneers' rising star, who stands 5-foot-10, 180 pound, scampered for 86 yards and two TD's against Hialeah. Loiseau ranks Top 20 in rushing yards in Miami-Dade County.
Freshman linebackers, #91, Dustin Vinas (Christopher Columbus) and, #6, Kavon Moore (Everglades Prep) both were responsible for 8 solo tackles. Moore single handedly tackled four-star recruit from University School as Vinas added one tackle for loss and a safety vs. Coral Park.
University School of Nova's freshman offensive tackle, #55, Marcus Tate, a 6-foot-5, 270 pound, continues to shine while learning on the go. The freshman who holds an early verbal offer by Bowling Green, was responsible for 5 pancakes and zero sacks vs. Everglades Prep.
South Miami HS has a prospect named Gabriel Nealy, pictured above, who passes the eye-ball test, towering opponents at 6-foot-4, 156 pounds. The two-way athlete recorded two tackles and 1 receiving touchdown from 35 yards out vs.
Miami Palmetto ATH Brashard Smith recorded over 100 all purpose yards versus Homestead with an 85 yard kickoff return to start the second half. Smith also had three long runs. One 60 yard scamper that was called back.
Miami Sunset. Miami Booker T. Washington placekicker, Andres Borregales (#20), who was selected to the All-American Bowl as an eighth-grader, went 2-for-3 and boomed a punt for 40 yards.
