The Next Wave: Quarterback Watch List (Underclassmen)
By Jerry Williamson
This year’s list was selected based on player performances consisting of the previous year, spring football, and all-star 7-on-7 performances. All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at their high school on varsity and/or stood out during the off-season circuit.
Miami Booker T. Washington freshman quarterback/athlete Torey "Scooter" Morrison, a honorable mention selection at the 8A classification the past season, is the shortest signal caller on the list, but stands at the top statically speaking. Morrison with (29) career touchdown passes per Miami Herald.
Next in-line is Dehron King (6'1", 190) of Deerfield Beach HS who took high school by storm as a freshman, earning Rising Stars' freshman of the year, and collecting several Football Subdivision offers. King has tossed (27) career touchdown passes.
FIVE TO WATCH
When considering their smarts and arm talent and spread offenses, long with wide receivers. These gunslingers: Demetrius Hill, Jr. (Champagnat Catholic), Brandon McDuffey, Jr. (Christopher Columbus), Jaylin Willis (Miami Southridge), Nick Viattaio (University School), and Cedquan Smith (Miramar) could finish top 10 in passing yards in their perspective county. Nick Viattaio and Torey "Scooter" Morrison will make first-team all-county. I'm certain of that bold prediction.
SMALL SCHOOL TALENT
Quarterbacks Alonso Gonzalez (Palm Glades Prep) and Santino Marucci (Benjamin School) both compete at the lowest classification, but when you watch their film you noticed quickly they can spin it and stand tall and confident in the pocket. They both have arm talent and will light up the scoreboard this fall. Keep an eye on Katravis Williams and James Ferriero, Jr., both stand 6-foot-3 with the body and arm college football coaches love to recruit. YOUNG AND TALENTED
Everglades Prep, which is located in Homestead, FL, has an all-around athlete (QB/WR/CB) named David Jester (6'1", 173) who is a 7th grader (class of 2023) that was responsible for 118 all-purpose yards and 2 TD's in his first varsity appearance at quarterback. 2018 South Florida Quarterback Watch List 21' - QB - Torey Morrison | 5-9, 150 | - Booker T.
